Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai, the northernmost major city in Thailand, offers a quieter, more contemplative alternative to its better-known neighbour Chiang Mai. Set amid rolling hills, rice fields, and misty mountains near the borders with Laos and Myanmar, it serves as a relaxed gateway to the legendary Golden Triangle region. The city itself has a small-town feel, with tree-lined streets, local markets, and a walkable centre that makes it easy for visitors to settle in.
Temples of Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is best known for its striking contemporary temples and art-focused attractions. The brilliant White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) blends traditional Buddhist imagery with surreal, modern design, while the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) dazzles with vivid indigo interiors and intricate murals. Nearby, the Black House (Baan Dam Museum) showcases a dark, unconventional complex of buildings filled with artworks and curiosities.
Beyond its famous landmarks, Chiang Rai is an excellent base for exploring hill-tribe villages, tea plantations, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints.
Tours & Tickets
Night markets, including the relaxed Walking Street, offer regional handicrafts and Northern Thai specialities like khao soi and nam ngiao. With its blend of culture, creativity, and nature in a slower-paced setting, Chiang Rai appeals to travellers seeking a more off-the-beaten-path side of Thailand.
